A 3D semantic annotation platform for documenting heritage objects

Archaeologists, architects, engineers, materials specialists, curators and restorers of cultural property, teachers, students, tourists… they all make different observations of heritage objects. Given the heterogeneity of the data produced, the need arose to identify a stable common denominator. This is the challenge that Aïoli has set itself, an application that places the heritage object at the heart of the process. Each heritage stakeholder is thus able to annotate the object directly, whether it’s a building, a sculpture, a painting, an objet d’art or archaeological fragments, and share it with his or her peers. This approach creates a bridge between the object and the information produced by a given community, creating a kind of “digital epidermis”. The temporal dimension of the objects is also taken into account, to enable the state of conservation and any deterioration to be monitored. From simple photographs, the application generates a 3D representation of the object photographed, which can be directly enriched with semantic annotations or additional resources linked to the object (text, images, video, sound, etc.).

This service is based on two major technological developments: the democratisation of photogrammetry techniques, which enable a 3D model to be calculated by image correlation, and the ability to gather, mass-process and share data via the cloud. This computing power is complemented by specific development for multidimensional propagation of spatialised semantic annotations. Thanks to this propagation process, annotations are automatically reprojected onto all 2D and 3D views of the object (past, present and future).

This tool, rooted in the rise of participatory science, aims to give rise to new multi-disciplinary working methodologies, and to develop new scenarios for comparative and collaborative analysis of heritage objects.
