Online publication of the "2-voices experiment". This content was created for the synthesis workshops of the ANR SESAMES project organised at the Chartreuse de Villeneuve Lez Avignon. It consists of a set of twelve questions relating to pairs of sounds that the listener has to compare. Listeners are asked to interpret these sounds to differentiate between voices or places, for example.
The aim of the experiment, scripted as a group experience, is to highlight the acoustic personalities of the different architectures studied as part of the SESAMES project.

Justifiers IS: visual encoding of plausibility analyses in virtual reconstructions.

J.Y. Blaise, I. Dudek, L. Bergerot

This development is based on a methodological proposal: introducing justification matrices that allow the analysts means to associate to the components of a 3D virtual reconstruction, “indicators” that formalise in a synthetic way an assessment of plausibility. These matrices allow to assign to individual 3D objects or to groups of objects a quantitative evaluation of their plausibility by crossing four criteria: shape, dimensions, existence, and position. The experiment led to the creation of a proof-of-concept prototype allowing a user to interact in real time with the graphic appearance of each object, represented in a 3D reconstruction, according to the values of its justification matrix. The approach is applied to four phases of the evolution of Marmoutier abbey's hostelry (corresponding to four synchronous states - 12th, 31 13th, 15th and 18th centuries). The development consists of a database and of on-the-fly representations in a 3D environment of plausibility analyses, but also a more abstract analytical visualisation that can be used to trace justification patterns in relation for instance with a specific type of architectural component.

Conceptual modelling and enrichment of the structure of two groups of activities

The need for enrichment was triggered by an initiative to check the suitability of the Memoria system for the description of protocols that do not fall within the field of historical heritage research (for example, protocols linked to ecological inventory studies or "site exploration" activities). Analysis of the structure of 'data collection and acquisition' activities revealed similar phases and activities for these distinct areas. The review also highlighted the presence of gaps in certain groups of activities, as well as structural biases caused by the focus on a specific discipline (e.g. archaeology).
As a result of these findings, the structure of the 'data collection and acquisition' group's activities was broadened:
• The enrichment of the structure of the activities with elements allowing to distinguish experimental and non-experimental approaches, "in situ" and "ex situ" activities, as well as "research design" (i.e. distinguishing research approaches and defining the phases and specificity of research design). The original structure of the activities did not include these factors - a consequence of the lack of experimental approaches in our practice.
• The 'setup installation' sub-group of activities has been extended to include activities and descriptors related to inspecting equipment and consumables, as well as a review of health precautions in relation to the possible need for decontamination - partial or total - of humans or animals involved in the data collection phase (human/animal inspection);
• The sub-group of 'contact data acquisition' activities has been extended to include activities and descriptors relating to the measurement of physical and chemical properties (physical properties acquisition, chemical properties acquisition),
• The remote sensing activity was supplemented by descriptors describing the physical properties that were measured,
• The sub-groups for activities related to site exploration and human-source information have been supplemented with descriptors relating to the senses used in data collection (perception mode).
• The descriptors relating to site particularities have been expanded.

The structure of the 'finalisation' group's activities has been broadened to include a 'presenting' activity and four descriptor groups.

• implementation of an indexing interface (addition and modification of global and local context elements, addition and modification of artefacts, alternative names, evolution of artefacts, references, transformations, states),
• PDF export - this module generates a PDF file for the selected object. The resulting file contains the sum of the information gathered in the database on the object in question (i.e. the analysis of the object's evolution proposed by various analysts), including the object's identification (main name and alternative names), known transformations of the object (dating, description and references), the consequences of these transformations (i.e. synchronous states) and elements of the historical context).

This redevelopment is cumulative in terms of its functionalities (new services).

The starting point of the survey is an observation: people involved in research tend not to document their work in a regular way. Or maybe they do, ... but each in a different way. The main objective of this study is to collect material (respondents' answers) in order to better identify difficulties and specificities in the documentation habits of research protocols in the different disciplines of the humanities and social sciences.
We therefore started by isolating the main aspects of interest and then proceeded with the formulation of the questions to be asked and the specification of the form of possible answers.

The questionnaire is designed for an "online interview".

This quiz is an edutainment version of the Territography exploratory research programme conducted by the UMR 3495 CNRS/MC MAP (Models and Simulations for Architecture and Heritage) and the MUCEM (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations) with the support of the PACA region between 2015 and 2018. It reuses, both in the illustrations and in the explanatory notes and descriptions of the objects presented, part of the collections of the MUCEM's agriculture and food section, a section under the responsibility of E. De Laubrie.
The descriptions of these contents are quite heterogeneous in terms of level of detail: they cover a collection period of more than a century, and the quizz has no other purpose than to highlight them. The "quizzmaker" technical platform used was developed within the UMR MAP as part of the ANR SESAMES project and its "ontologies" component. It is used primarily in the context of two learning games based on architectural vocabulary. Quizz-Mucemis at this stage a proof-of-concept exploratory repurposing of quizzmaker , more than a robust training game.
Quizz-Mucem reformats contents gathered for the Territography project (specific database created) and extends them in a minor way.

Texts (names and definitions) are in French language, the collection of objects covers the Provence region only.

Combined metric and acoustic survey process based on the SESAMES experiments and designed for execution during the project's end-of-term workshop (Chartreuse de Villeneuve-lès-Avignon 22-24 June 2022). The objective was to perform data acquisition in two interiors, first in "empty room" condition (before the workshop) and then in "full room" condition (during the workshop). Only the acoustic part is concerned by this second acquisition. The protocol set up had to allow the same tripod positions to be used in the empty room acquisition and then in the full room acquisition.
The surveys were accompanied by direct documentation of the sequences of activities involved (types and duration of activities and people involved throughout the acquisition process).
Three processes documented in MEMORIA:

1) (18/05/2022) acquisition of acoustic/metric data, preparatory protocol for the SESAMES end-of-term workshop (Jean Salusse room),
2) (18/05/2022) acquisition of acoustic/metric data, preparatory protocol for the SESAMES end-of-term workshop (Gothic room),
3) (23/06/2022) repetition of the acquisition of 18 May, but this time with the room full (25 people randomly arranged, Jean Salusse room).

The 'architectural vocabulary' quiz, available as a classic web interface and as an application for smartphones, is a learning game through which the user must associate a term ('concept') with an image ('instance'), and can, through the 'guide' mode, have access to definitions, references, or indications and interpretations in case of polysemy.
The first version of the 'architectural vocabulary' quiz was published in June 2022. The database that feeds the quiz includes :

• 137 classes (categories and concepts in terms of their ontological positioning)
• 123 items (instantiable concepts, characterised by definitional elements and, where applicable, by translations and references to other online sources)
• 123 graphics associated with the concepts (ad-hoc schematics or image considered as paradigmatic)
• 492 instances (illustrated by photographs and locations, where necessary with an overlay - typically arrows – that helps designating precisely the object to be recognised in the image)
• 11 bibliographic references
• 149 'confusion' relationships (concepts often mistaken for each other)

The definitions, comments and photographs used in the quiz were partly extracted from the lexicons prepared as part of the joint MAP/LIFAT work on the ontologies component of the ANR SESAMES project, and partly produced ex-nihilo from bibliographic research (terms), digging in personal archives and new acquisitions (photographs of instances).
A specific version of the "architectural vocabulary" was created that deals exclusively with the architecture of the Chartreuse de Villeneuve Lez Avignon and its surroundings.
This version required an in situ acquisition phase carried out during the ANR SESAMES synthesis workshops, 22-24 June 2022. The database that feeds this version uses the same elements at the conceptual level, but only includes 68 instances. The guide mode, on the other hand, provides access to all the content at the 'concept' level.

Development of an online soundscape annotation tool, prepared within the framework of the SESAMES research programme (project ANR-18-CE38-0009-01), with the initial objective of exploiting the "air backgrounds" (sound tracks testifying to the nature of the sounds, anthropic or not, heard in situ during the SESAMES MAP/PRISM survey campaigns).
The tool, abbreviated to soundscape annotation tool, more generally allows a user to annotate sound tracks interactively, by associating a "sound type" with a segment of the recorded sound track.

Components of the tool :
• A grid of types distinguishing between natural and anthropogenic sounds, including "perceptual" indicators allowing the user to translate their interpretation of the distance to the sound, or the movement of that sound.
• A database referencing the "SESAMES" sound tracks recorded by PRISM (A. Vidal, S. Fargeot) during the survey campaigns, plus three tracks recorded in the J. Aiguier campus (MAP).
• An online web annotation interface developed by M. Zawieja.

This is an exploratory development, which should eventually allow on the one hand to annotate / type the components of a sound track testifying to a sound environment, and on the other hand to build visualisations highlighting patterns within a site or between sites.

The database was at the origin mainly used to structure and to provide access via the project’s website to different sets of preliminary results, including a variety of documents targeting a wide public.
DB subsequently extended to raw data management, including normative dimensions (as defined in the SESAMES systematic spatial analysis grid).

Creation of a systematic dimensional analysis grid with the objective of having for each building a set of standardized dimensions to be used for different comparative analyses.
These dimensions relate to different granularities: some relate to atomic spaces (apse of the chancel for example) others to composite spaces (a nave made up of several bays). Each dimension is associated with an origin, in other words with indications on the method used to obtain the measurement (manual measurement, systematic rangefinder-based survey, point cloud, deduced measurement, etc.). The grid is explained by graphic documents (plans and sections of each chapel) and translated by a table within the SESAMES database.

The "Chronographer" is an online IS that allows the construction of visual translations of the "chronographs" model of formalisation of buildings’ evolution. Chronographs are primarily designed in order to allow analysts to describe and visualise architectural transformations. They build on a description framework that focuses on the way artefacts get transformed, with a grid of notions giving the analysts the means to date, describe and order events/facts/elements of context that are consider meaningful in the understanding of the artefact’s transformations.

The system allows the selection of a building in three modes: access by name, cartographic access and access by image (thumbnails).

- interface design using independent "chronograph" data bases dedicated to distinct architectural corpora,
- development of the "chronographer" web application - work carried out in part as part of an internship, leading to an interactive website.

Design and implementation of a series of online forms (activity_instance) combining textual and graphic elements, used to feed the MEMORIA database. The forms allow the description of individual activities forming a process.
Individual activities are identified by their type (position in an ontological hierarchy) and by a set of descriptors associated with each type of activity. Then the repetitive or iterative nature of the activity is indicated.
The activity author(s) can range from "anonymous" - if the author is unknown - to a list of individuals associated with organisations, and/or with a list of organisations. External sources or raw data used to carry out an activity can be associated with the activity, as well as expertise and outputs specific to the activity. The list of instruments and software used during the activity may be specified as well.
The duration of the activity can be notified by the dates of the start and the end of the activity and be potentially associated with a time interval expressing its actual duration (e.g., 1 week).

MEMORIA starts as a digital content database the aim of which can be summarised through a few words: memorising the production process as well as the result itself.
Indeed documenting and analysing Cultural Heritage artefacts today still implies for actors making a large number of choices & inferences (selection of inputs, tools, references, relations and analogies,...) often in connection with non-formalised expertises or unsaid know-how. A reliable “documentation” process should allow users to memorize these steps in order to ensure reproducibility – not to say scientific cross-examination. What is at stake here is not technological challenges such as interoperability or availability across platforms but on one hand, good practices (content/processing separation for instance) and on the other hand eliciting the path to the “deliverable”.
The MEMORIA initiative can be seen an attempt to try and formalise digital content production processes so as to ensure an efficient and reliable transfer of knowledge.

These commercial facilities share challenging particularities:
- They cannot be precisely located within the market square (known only in archival sources by expressions such as “close to the town hall” or “located in the northern sector”). Moreover, they were wooden structures, and were demolished during the XIXth century. There is accordingly no archaeological indication we can count on.

- Almost no direct visual or textual archival material can be found that would help analysts say what were their construction and organisation. In fact, these facilities may even not have been “buildings” in the proper sense: they could have been rows of movable stalls, not physically connected to one another, but considered as a consistent group basing on their common function (goods/services sold).
Basing on a 1760 inventory, we here analyse tax/layout and tax/ surface proportionality.
