What is this web portal about?
This portal gives access to research material gathered in the preparation of a publication entitled Architectural transformations on the Market Square in Krakow - A visual catalogue *.
* Authors: Jean-Yves BLAISE, Iwona DUDEK, Waldemar KOMOROWSKI and Tomasz WECLAWOWICZ, edited by AFM.

The publication follows several years of interdisciplinary research on Krakow's history and architectural heritage, with a focus on the evolution of the architectural artefacts that occupied the Main Market Square. It combines methodological aspects (defining and formalising the notion of "transformation"), bottom-ground research material (a large amount of historical sources about the edifices under scrutiny), and experimental results (tangible 3Dmodels, visualisations).

The material provided online through this portal consists of two components available in both the English and Polish languages:

- an in-depth description of the research method developed in order to analyse the transformations over time of edifices that were built on the Main Market Square in Krakow. The resulting description framework is a generic one though.

- a detailed analysis of 41 edifices, that includes both actual sources (bibliographic notes, compiled for each evolution of each object) and interpretations.

In addition, two links to sub-portals dedicated to web developments that have been built over the above case study are proposed:

- the different faces of one idea repository, a collection of edifices, distributed accross the European territory, that can be compared (in terms of function) to those identified on the Main Market Square in Krakow.

- the visual analysis addendum, a series of abstract visualisations that build on the data and information sets in an effort to cross-examine the evidence, and derive from it new knowledge.

The online content consists of PDF files, images and texts, and of a series of SVG interactive visualisations.
